Feeling rushed, restless or restive? Mindfulness can help!

As a student, your life is full of activities: attending lectures, caring for yourself, going to parties, a job, visiting friends, and housekeeping. Sometimes there are not enough hours in a day. Student life can be fun, but all these activities can also make you feel rushed or overstimulated. This can result in stress symptoms such as tension, anxiety, sleeping problems, less concentration, or agitation. This could impact your life negatively. How do you cope with this?

Your specific situation

It is important to think about what the source is of your stress. Did something bad or big happen lately? Are there situations in which the feeling is more present or absent? There are techniques such as mindfulness that can help you cope with restlessness. These techniques are no ‘quick fix’: your feelings will not immediately be gone, but practicing regularly can help to suffer less from them.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is one of the things that can help against a restless feeling. Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present. You are aware of where you are and what you are doing. You take a moment to focus on yourself: how do I feel physically and mentally? What thoughts do I have? What is going on at this moment? By practicing mindfulness, you take a break from your activities. This helps to calm your feelings. Exercises you could do are breathing exercises or a body scan. Mindfulness is a scientifically proven technique to lower stress levels. Many people experience that when they start their day with mindfulness, their day feels less rushed. Especially when you have a full, busy day, practicing mindfulness can help to find some rest.

Practicing

Are you already in touch with a Siggie coach and practicing e-health modules? Take a look at the exercises in the self-compassion module. Otherwise, the app ‘Headspace’ is a great app to start practicing meditation and mindfulness.
On YouTube, there are numerous videos about meditation as well.
